Sometimes a film releases quietly. Sometimes a film walks into a storm before the first show. This one chose the storm.
Here’s what’s happened. Shortly after the trailer of The Kerala Story 2 dropped, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan publicly criticised the film, calling it “propaganda” and urging people to reject it. He said the sequel appears to continue the same narrative as the first film and could disturb the state’s religious harmony. And just like that, a trailer launch turned into full-blown headline material.
Right now, the film hasn’t released, but the conversation definitely has. The makers haven’t issued a detailed response to the Chief Minister’s remarks yet. Meanwhile, clips from the trailer are circulating widely, TV debates have picked it up, and social media timelines are split, some defending the film’s right to tell its story, others backing the concerns raised. Classic digital culture moment.
This isn’t the first time this franchise has been here. The first part titled, The Kerala Story, faced protests, bans, and heavy criticism, but it also performed strongly at the box office. That history is exactly why this sequel is being watched so closely. In the Indian entertainment industry, controversy and curiosity often travel together.
As of now, we’re waiting for two things: an official response from the filmmakers and the film’s theatrical release. Because once it hits theatres, the audience response could either amplify the debate… or completely change its direction.
At the moment, the film hasn’t even reached cinemas. But the controversies have already begun.
