Sonu Nigam has clarified that he did not comment on the controversy surrounding Kriti Sanon’s Raksha Bandhan advertisement, after a statement circulating online was wrongly attributed to him.

Sonu Says The Statement Was Not His

A post from an X account using Sonu Nigam’s name was picked up by a media report and presented as the singer’s reaction to Kriti’s controversial GIVA advertisement. Sonu has now rejected the claim, sharing a screenshot of the report on Instagram and writing, “This is not me and This has never been me.”

The Account Belonged To Someone Else

The confusion appears to have happened because the X account belonged to another person with the same name. Sonu Nigam has repeatedly maintained that he is not active on X.

The Fake Statement Went Viral

The statement attributed to Sonu had commented on the debate around Kriti’s outfit and the use of traditional festivals in advertising. It quickly attracted attention because it appeared to be a strong reaction to the ongoing controversy.

Kriti’s Ad Had Already Sparked A Debate

The GIVA campaign featuring Kriti Sanon faced criticism over her outfit while celebrating Raksha Bandhan. Kriti defended the campaign, arguing that culture and traditions are not defined by what a woman wears.

GIVA Pulled Down The Campaign

Following the backlash, GIVA withdrew the advertisement from all media and said that it respects Indian culture, traditions and festivals and did not intend to hurt anyone’s sentiments.

A Reminder To Verify Celebrity Statements

The episode has also raised questions about how quickly statements from impersonator accounts can be attributed to public figures. Sonu’s clarification makes it clear that the viral comments should not be considered his views.

KnowBuddys Take

The biggest twist in this Raksha Bandhan controversy is that Sonu Nigam never actually joined the conversation. A fake attribution became news, and now the singer is having to clarify something he never said.
