Some films don’t just entertain they hold up a mirror, challenge conventions, and leave behind a legacy. But not all of them get the applause they truly deserve. Over the years, Bollywood has served us cinematic gems bold, ahead of their time, rich in thought and craft but we, the audience, were too distracted to notice.
Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (1983) mixed slapstick with sharp political satire, while Andaz Apna Apna (1994) was misunderstood in its time, only to become a cult favorite much later. Shah Rukh Khan’s intense Dil Se (1998) spoke of insurgency and obsession but went over many heads. Films like Swades and Lakshya carried emotion, identity, and purpose yet didn’t find their moment at the box office.
Then came Rocket Singh and Tamasha quietly brilliant, layered with realism and inner conflict but too “non-masala” for mass appeal. And Tumbbad? A visual and thematic masterpiece that blurred lines between horror and folklore, underwatched and underappreciated.
These are the films where Bollywood showed up, but maybe… we didn’t.
