Ananya Panday’s latest film Chand Mera Dil is suddenly trending everywhere but not entirely for the reasons the makers probably expected. A Bharatnatyam-inspired dance sequence featuring the actress has gone viral online and social media reactions have been brutally divided. While some viewers defended the performance as a “fusion” attempt, many others called it awkward, disrespectful, and completely disconnected from the elegance of the classical dance form.
Why The Dance Sequence Sparked Controversy
The viral clip shows Ananya performing a choreography sequence blending Bharatanatyam-inspired movements with contemporary styling during a college event scene in the film. However, viewers quickly criticised the expressions, hand mudras, posture, and overall execution, claiming the performance lacked the grace and technical authenticity associated with classical Indian dance.
The Internet Did NOT Hold Back
Social media reactions have honestly been ruthless. Users on X, Instagram, and Reddit flooded timelines with memes, sarcastic edits, and comparisons to trained performers like Sridevi and Sai Pallavi. Several viral posts claimed Bollywood should stop “experimenting” with classical dance forms without proper preparation.
One viral Reddit post joked that “Bharatanatyam survived 2000 years only to reach 2026,” while another thread turned the scene into full meme material overnight.
Even Public Figures Joined The Debate
The controversy escalated further after Congress spokesperson Dr. Shama Mohamed publicly criticised the performance, saying Ananya “killed” her favourite dance form and urged Bollywood not to insult Bharatanatyam. Her comments quickly amplified the conversation beyond film audiences into mainstream pop culture discourse.
Fusion Dance Or Misrepresentation?
Interestingly, some viewers argued the sequence was never meant to be pure Bharatanatyam in the first place. Reports suggest the choreography intentionally attempted a fusion between hip-hop and classical dance aesthetics. But critics online responded by saying fusion still requires understanding and technical respect for the original form.
Meanwhile, Chand Mera Dil Is Still Pulling Attention
Despite the backlash, Chand Mera Dil starring Ananya Panday and Lakshya continues attracting online engagement and discussion. The romantic drama has reportedly crossed decent weekend box office numbers, proving that controversy often keeps films in conversation longer than expected.
Know Buddys Take
At this point, the Bharatnatyam scene has become bigger than the movie itself.
And honestly, the internet’s reaction shows how emotionally protective people are about classical art forms in India. Fusion can absolutely work but audiences can instantly tell when something feels authentic versus when it looks forced for aesthetics alone.
