Shabana Azmi Had Questioned The Casting

Shabana Azmi had earlier suggested that Sunny Deol’s established image may have affected how audiences perceived his character, Sikandar Mirza. She compared the situation with Amitabh Bachchan, who played Muslim characters in films such as Coolie and Deewaar.

Santoshi Doesn’t Agree

Rajkumar Santoshi has now rejected that explanation, pointing out that Amitabh Bachchan successfully played Muslim heroes despite being one of Hindi cinema’s biggest stars. He questioned whether audiences have become less accepting of actors portraying characters from different communities.

He Says Society Has Become Less Tolerant

Santoshi believes the issue reflects a larger change in society. He said people have become less tolerant and inclusive compared with earlier periods, when films could feature characters from different faiths without the same level of resistance.

Sunny Deol Plays An Indian Muslim

Santoshi has also repeatedly clarified that Sunny Deol’s Sikandar Mirza is not Pakistani. He is an Indian Muslim who is forced to migrate to Pakistan during Partition to protect his family.
