Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is making waves at the global box office, but now it’s facing an unexpected controversy behind the scenes. The owners of a Viking longship replica used during filming have alleged that the production failed to reimburse them for ₹5.7 lakh (around $6,000) in repair costs after the vessel was returned with damage. The claim has sparked a public dispute just as the film continues its successful theatrical run.

What Is The Dispute About?

The replica Viking ship, owned by the Swedish non-profit association Vikingaleden, was reportedly used for around six months during the production of The Odyssey. According to the owners, the vessel suffered damage to its stern and mast while being used on set. They claim the studio had agreed to cover the repair costs, but despite submitting an invoice for materials, they have not yet received payment.

Studio Responds To The Claims

Universal Pictures has disputed the allegations. The studio stated that all invoices had been paid and added that it is now in contact with the ship’s owners to resolve the matter. While both sides have shared different versions of events, the disagreement has drawn significant attention online.

The Film Keeps Sailing Ahead

Despite the off-screen controversy, The Odyssey has enjoyed a massive start at the box office, crossing $300 million worldwide within its first week. Directed by Christopher Nolan, the epic stars Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, and Charlize Theron, making it one of the biggest Hollywood releases of the year.
