The Dhamaal franchise is now caught in a legal mess, and the latest update comes directly from Maruti International. The company, associated with producer Ashok Thakeria, has issued a statement after an alleged Rs 1.50 crore fraud case was registered over the rights of the 2007 comedy film.
The Dispute Is About Dhamaal’s Rights
The case follows a complaint by Vikas Baldevraj Sahni, owner of Mumbai-based distribution company Grand Master. According to the complaint, Grand Master entered into an agreement with Maruti International in 2019 for the worldwide distribution, digital rights and copyrights of Dhamaal for Rs 1.50 crore.
The Rights Had Allegedly Been Sold Earlier
Sahni has alleged that he was initially assured the rights had not been sold to another party. However, he later claimed that the film’s lifetime OTT and digital rights had already been sold to Shemaroo Entertainment in 2015, four years before the Grand Master agreement.
An FIR Was Reportedly Registered
Mumbai Police reportedly registered a case against director Indra Kumar and producer Ashok Thakeria on August 17 following Sahni’s complaint. The allegations are now being investigated, and the claims have not been established in court.
Maruti International Responds
Amid the controversy, Maruti International has broken its silence. The company said it is currently in discussions with the concerned party and that the matter regarding the rights will be resolved mutually after further discussions.
Dhamaal Is Now Part Of A Bigger Franchise
The original Dhamaal released in 2007 and went on to become a cult comedy. The franchise recently returned with Dhamaal 4, starring Ajay Devgn, Arshad Warsi, Riteish Deshmukh and Jaaved Jaaferi, making the rights dispute even more relevant to the franchise’s current spotlight.
