Batwara 1947 arrives with a powerful premise: Partition, displacement and the unlikely bond between a Muslim family and an elderly Hindu woman who refuses to leave her Lahore home. But according to Mid-Day’s review, the film often struggles to balance its emotional core with Sunny Deol’s trademark intensity. Here’s what the review says:

A Story About Humanity During Partition

Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and inspired by Asghar Wajahat’s play Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya O Jamyai Nai, the film follows Sikandar Mirza, played by Sunny Deol, who moves to Lahore with his family during Partition. The family is allotted a house that already has an elderly Hindu woman, Mai, played by Shabana Azmi, living in it. Their relationship becomes the emotional centre of the story.

Sunny Deol Goes Full Sunny Deol

The review argues that Sunny Deol’s performance sometimes becomes too loud for the simplicity of the story. His trademark intensity, booming dialogue delivery and larger-than-life presence can overpower quieter emotional moments that the film needs to land.

Shabana Azmi Steals The Emotional Spotlight

If Sunny brings the volume, Shabana brings the restraint. Her performance as Mai reportedly gives the film its emotional grounding, with the actor emerging as one of its biggest strengths. Other reviews have similarly highlighted Azmi as a standout performer.

Preity Zinta Brings Warmth

Preity Zinta plays Hamida, Sikandar’s wife, in her return to the big screen. The film gives her a relatively grounded role, and her presence adds warmth to a story otherwise dominated by conflict and emotional upheaval. Early reviews have also praised her return to Hindi cinema.

The Film Has A Strong Message

Despite its uneven storytelling, Batwara 1947 attempts to use Partition as a larger conversation about communal harmony, humanity and the consequences of hatred. Several early reviews have appreciated the film’s emotional message, even while opinions differ on its execution.

KnowBuddys Take

Batwara 1947 clearly has the right ingredients: a powerful history, a strong cast and a message that still feels relevant. But if the story asks for subtlety, Sunny Deol’s larger-than-life approach can sometimes feel like too much. Shabana Azmi, meanwhile, seems to understand exactly when to let silence do the talking.
