Some childhood memories really do come with their own weather report. Padma Lakshmi recently took a trip down memory lane by sharing a 1977 photograph from her childhood in Chennai. The throwback came with memories of family, summer evenings, her grandfather’s Ambassador and the unmistakable Chennai heat. Here’s what we know:

A Throwback From 1977

Padma shared a childhood photograph featuring herself and her family sitting on her grandfather’s 1969 Ambassador. The picture was taken during her grandfather’s 60th birthday puja, bringing back memories of her childhood summers in Chennai.

Chennai Summers Hit Different

Remembering those days, Padma described the heat of the Coromandel coast and even recalled the mosquitoes that came along with it. She also remembered how her grandmother would only allow the children to go outside once the sun had started to go down.

Her Grandfather’s Ambassador Has A Story Too

The vintage car wasn’t just part of the photograph. Padma revealed that she would eventually learn to drive her grandfather’s 1969 Ambassador in the 1980s while travelling on the road to Mahabalipuram.

Family Memories Came With It

Padma also introduced the family members featured in the photograph, including her mother, aunt Banu and cousins. She recalled that her aunt played an important role in her childhood, teaching her both cooking and multiplication tables.

From Chennai Childhood To Global Stardom

Born in India, Padma Lakshmi moved to the United States as a child and later built a career as a model, actor, author and television host. She went on to become widely known for hosting Top Chef and later created and hosted Taste the Nation with Padma Lakshmi.
