For years, fans have believed that Rancho from 3 Idiots was inspired by Sonam Wangchuk. Now, amid Wangchuk’s ongoing hunger strike, Aamir Khan has addressed both the long-standing misconception and the activist’s health. Speaking at the London Indian Film Festival, Aamir expressed concern for Wangchuk and said he sincerely hopes the activist ends his fast soon.

“3 Idiots Wasn’t Based On Sonam Wangchuk”

Aamir clarified that while he has immense respect for Sonam Wangchuk, the makers of 3 Idiots did not know him when the film was being made. He explained that the character of Phunsukh Wangdu (Rancho) was not directly inspired by Wangchuk, calling the connection a common misconception that has circulated for years.

Concern Over Wangchuk’s Health

Beyond clearing up the film’s connection, Aamir spoke about Wangchuk’s current hunger strike, saying everyone is worried about his health. He expressed hope that Wangchuk would end his fast soon and reiterated his respect for the activist’s work, regardless of any association with 3 Idiots.

The Hunger Strike Continues

Sonam Wangchuk has been on an indefinite hunger strike over issues related to India’s education system, and concerns about his health have grown as the protest has continued. Several public figures have appealed for dialogue and for Wangchuk to prioritise his health while continuing to advocate for his cause.

Know Buddys Take

Sometimes, the biggest headline isn’t about a movie. It’s about the people connected to it. Aamir’s statement does two things at once, it clears up a years-old myth about 3 Idiots while also expressing concern for Sonam Wangchuk’s well-being. Whatever your perspective on the issue, it’s a reminder that health and dialogue matter.
