Sometimes… A film doesn’t land in controversy because it’s fictional. It lands there because it hits a little too close to reality. Filmmaker Gurvinder Singh has weighed in on the controversy surrounding Diljit Dosanjh’s Satluj, saying the film’s biggest challenge was its unflinching, explicit storytelling. While calling the censorship surrounding the film “disheartening,” he also suggested that the makers consciously chose a direct approach, knowing it could invite resistance.

“The Film Faced This Because It Was So Explicit”

Speaking about the controversy, Gurvinder said Satluj refuses to soften the painful realities it portrays. According to him, director Honey Trehan wanted the film to leave a lasting impact instead of diluting its message to make it easier to release. Gurvinder acknowledged that there may have been “other ways” to tell the story, but believes the filmmakers stayed committed to their vision.

The Debate Has Become Bigger Than The Movie

Originally titled Punjab ’95, the film has faced years of certification hurdles before finally premiering on ZEE5, only to be removed from the platform in India shortly after its release. The controversy has since reignited national conversations around censorship, artistic freedom, and how sensitive historical events should be portrayed in cinema.

History, Cinema & A Very Uncomfortable Conversation

Satluj is inspired by the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, whose investigations into alleged disappearances and illegal cremations in Punjab remain one of the country’s most debated historical subjects. Because of that, the film has become more than just a movie. It’s now at the centre of an ongoing discussion about truth, memory, and whether difficult stories should be told exactly as they happened—or reshaped to avoid controversy.

Know Buddys Take

Here’s the tea. Whether you agree with Satluj or not… One thing is impossible to ignore. People aren’t just debating the film anymore. They’re debating who gets to tell history, and how. That’s what makes Satluj such an important cultural conversation. Sometimes the biggest impact a movie makes isn’t at the box office…It’s in the discussions it leaves behind.
