The accused in the Saif Ali Khan stabbing case, Mohammad Shariful Islam, has approached a Mumbai court expressing his willingness to plead guilty and has also sought leniency while the court considers the matter. The court has asked the prosecution to respond to his application and has adjourned the hearing to September 11. The development comes shortly after charges were formally framed against Islam, who had earlier pleaded not guilty.

Accused Seeks To Plead Guilty

Mohammad Shariful Islam, who is currently in judicial custody, filed the application through his lawyer Vipul Dushing on August 28. He has expressed his willingness to admit guilt in connection with the alleged attack on Saif Ali Khan.

Court Seeks Prosecution’s Response

The Mumbai court has not yet accepted the plea. It has directed the prosecution to file its response before deciding on the application, with the next hearing scheduled for September 11.

Charges Were Recently Framed

Earlier this month, Additional Sessions Judge G P Deshmukh formally framed charges against Islam. These include offences relating to robbery involving a deadly weapon, causing grievous hurt and house trespass, along with charges under the Foreigners Act and Passport rules.

A Major Shift In The Case

When the charges were framed, Islam had pleaded not guilty. His latest application therefore marks a significant change in his position as the case moves forward.

The January 2025 Attack

Saif Ali Khan was allegedly attacked by an intruder inside his Bandra residence on January 16, 2025. The actor suffered multiple stab wounds and underwent emergency surgery at Lilavati Hospital before being discharged several days later.

The case has taken a major turn just as the trial was beginning. The accused is now seeking to plead guilty and asking for leniency, but the court will first hear the prosecution’s response before deciding what happens next.
