Assi, directed by Anubhav Sinha and starring Taapsee Pannu, has wrapped its opening weekend at Rs 4.10 crore nett. The film added around Rs 1.50 crore on Day 3, showing a drop instead of growth on Sunday. For a content driven drama, the numbers are modest and below expectations.
While early reactions to the film are positive, the footfall has not matched the appreciation. Many feel the film suffered from low visibility and limited buzz before release. Without a strong marketing push or event level hype, it has struggled to attract a wider audience in theatres.
The comparison with Thappad is inevitable. That film opened at Rs 2.75 crore and grew strongly over the weekend, eventually finishing its run around Rs 30 crore nett. Assi is currently nowhere close to that pace and will need exceptional weekday stability to stay afloat.
KnowBuddys Take
In today’s post OTT era, mid budget content driven films require strong pre release buzz to succeed in theatres. Assi may have the substance, but without consistent box office momentum, sustaining its run will be challenging in the coming weeks.
