Anupam Kher is looking at acting differently with age. The veteran actor has reflected on how his approach to the craft has evolved, saying that he is now more relaxed, less anxious and no longer feels the same pressure to prove himself.
From Proving Himself To Finding The Character
Kher recalled that early in his career, he was constantly trying to prove his range. Having entered films without a traditional industry godfather, he relied heavily on his training at the National School of Drama and wanted audiences to see what he could do.
Age Has Made Him More Relaxed
The actor said that over the last decade, his approach has changed significantly. Instead of worrying about impressing people, he now enjoys exploring a character’s silences, contradictions, weaknesses and imperfections.
Acting Is About Vulnerability
Kher also spoke about the emotional side of acting. He believes actors have to be vulnerable enough to explore emotions such as grief, fear, jealousy, love and insecurity, making the profession both emotionally demanding and brave.
He Is Still Learning
For Kher, growing older has not meant becoming complacent. In fact, he feels it has made him more curious. Instead of trying to show how much he knows, he now focuses on discovering what he still doesn’t know about the craft.
A Career Built On Reinvention
Kher’s approach reflects a career spanning more than four decades, during which he has played characters across genres and generations. He has previously spoken about treating every new role as an opportunity to unlearn and start from scratch.
