Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 is enjoying a massive box-office run, but the action entertainer has hit an unexpected hurdle in Canada. York Cinemas has announced that it will stop screening the film from October 21, 2026, citing a distribution-related technical issue. According to the exhibitor, it has completed its financial commitments but has not received the digital authorisation keys required to continue screening the movie. The development comes as the film crosses Rs 500 crore worldwide.

1. Jailer 2 Screenings Halted At York Cinemas In Canada

Canadian exhibitor York Cinemas has announced that Jailer 2 will no longer be screened at its theatres with effect from Wednesday, October 21.

In a statement shared on Instagram, the cinema said the decision was due to circumstances beyond its control. The announcement came as a surprise to moviegoers, particularly given the film’s strong theatrical performance since its October 15 release.

2. What Is The Reason Behind The Screening Halt?

According to York Cinemas, the issue concerns the non-receipt of valid Key Delivery Messages, commonly known as KDMs. These digital keys are required to unlock and play encrypted films on cinema projection systems.

The exhibitor claimed it had fulfilled all the necessary financial commitments and payments but had not received the required KDMs from the film’s North American distributors, Shloka Entertainments and Prathyangira Cinemas, following authorisation from production house Sun Pictures.

Without these keys, the cinema said it was technically unable to continue screening the film.

3. York Cinemas Says It Tried To Resolve The Issue

In its statement, York Cinemas said it had made efforts to resolve the matter and continue screenings for its patrons. However, the necessary authorisation had not arrived.

The exhibitor apologised to audiences for the inconvenience and disappointment caused by the cancellation. It also thanked customers for their patience and continued support.

The statement places the immediate responsibility for the disruption on the unresolved distribution and authorisation issue. The distributors and production house had not publicly responded to the matter at the time of the report.

4. What Are KDMs And Why Are They Important?

KDM stands for Key Delivery Message. It is a digital security key used in cinema distribution to authorise playback of an encrypted movie on an approved projection system.

Films distributed digitally often require these keys to ensure that the content can be played only on authorised equipment and within the permitted screening period.

If a theatre does not receive a valid key, or if the key is no longer valid, it cannot legally and technically play the encrypted film through its digital projection system. This is why the missing KDMs have prevented York Cinemas from continuing the screenings.

5. Jailer 2 Crosses Rs 500 Crore Worldwide

The screening disruption comes at a time when Jailer 2 is enjoying a strong box-office run. The film crossed the Rs 500 crore worldwide gross mark within five days of release.

The Dussehra holiday period has contributed to the film’s theatrical momentum, helping it become one of the biggest Indian box-office performers of 2026 so far.

The Canadian issue, however, highlights how distribution and technical problems can affect a film’s availability in a particular market even while it continues to perform strongly elsewhere.

6. Rajinikanth Returns As Tiger Muthuvel Pandian

Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar and backed by Sun Pictures, Jailer 2 brings Rajinikanth back as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, following the success of the 2023 film Jailer.

The sequel features returning cast members including Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu, Mirnaa and Rithvik, alongside new additions such as S. J. Suryah, Mithun Chakraborty, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Vidya Balan, Anna Rajan and Jatin Sarna.

The film’s combination of action, humour and a large ensemble cast has helped generate considerable audience interest.

7. Will Jailer 2 Screenings Resume In Canada?

As of the latest report, York Cinemas had not announced when screenings might resume. The issue will depend on the necessary digital keys and authorisation being provided so that the film can be shown again.

Neither the North American distributors nor Sun Pictures had publicly clarified the situation at the time of publication. Until the issue is resolved, audiences hoping to watch Jailer 2 at York Cinemas will have to wait for further updates.

KnowBuddys Take

Jailer 2 is collecting hundreds of crores worldwide, but in Canada, the problem isn’t ticket sales or audience interest — it’s the digital keys needed to run the film. York Cinemas says it has made its payments but still cannot screen the movie without the required authorisation. A box-office hit, now caught in a distribution snag.
