Mirzapur: The Movie has landed in controversy over its use of the song “Shoorveer”, with senior Rajasthan BJP leader Rajendra Rathore writing to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) seeking its removal. The song, created as a tribute to Maharana Pratap, plays during an action sequence involving gangster characters in the film, prompting objections over its cultural and historical association.

1. Why is Mirzapur: The Movie facing backlash?

The controversy centres on the film’s opening action sequence, where Munna Tripathi, played by Divyenndu, and his gang are involved in a violent shootout while “Shoorveer” plays in the background. The song celebrates the bravery of Maharana Pratap and his legendary horse Chetak, which has led some viewers and political figures to question its placement alongside criminal characters.

2. BJP leader Rajendra Rathore writes to CBFC

Senior BJP leader and former Rajasthan Assembly Leader of Opposition Rajendra Rathore has formally objected to the song’s use.In his letter to CBFC chairperson Shashi Shekhar Vempati, Rathore called the use of the song inappropriate and requested that it be removed from the film.

3. Rathore says the song’s context is objectionable

Rathore argued that a song created to honour Maharana Pratap’s valour, sacrifice and self-respect should not be associated with gangsters and criminal activity. He said linking the song with characters involved in violence and other illegal activities could hurt public sentiments and, in his view, diminishes the historical significance attached to Maharana Pratap.

4. The song’s creator has also objected

The controversy isn’t limited to the political complaint.

Rajasthani singer and rapper Rapperiya Baalam, who created and performed “Shoorveer,” has also expressed anger over its use. He has alleged that the song was used without his permission or proper consent and has issued a legal notice to the makers and the record company.

5. Rapperiya Baalam wants the song removed

According to reports, Baalam has demanded that the song be removed and that the makers issue an apology. His family has also reportedly sought further action over the alleged unauthorised use. Baalam has additionally proposed that a school named after Maharana Pratap be established as part of the resolution he is seeking.

6. The controversy comes after earlier CBFC changes

Interestingly, Mirzapur: The Movie had already undergone several CBFC modifications before its theatrical release. The film received an A certificate, with changes reportedly made to certain cuss words, a caste reference and intimate scenes. However, the violent and gory sequences were not cut.

7. The makers have not publicly responded yet

As of the latest reports, the filmmakers and producers have not publicly responded to the objections raised over “Shoorveer.”The controversy therefore remains centred on the demands made by Rathore, Baalam and other critics, while the CBFC’s response to the latest request is awaited.

Mirzapur really went from “Gaddi kaun sambhalega?” to “CBFC ko letter kaun likhega?” The controversy around “Shoorveer” isn’t just about a song it’s about context.A track created to celebrate Maharana Pratap’s bravery is being used during a violent gangster sequence, and now both its creator and political figures are questioning that choice. At the same time, the filmmakers haven’t publicly responded yet.
