Just when you thought the Satluj saga couldn’t get any more intense… Another major chapter has been added. Days after Diljit Dosanjh’s film disappeared from ZEE5 India, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has strongly condemned the move, calling it an attempt to suppress historical truth. The Sikh body has demanded that the film be restored immediately, arguing that history cannot simply be erased by removing a movie.

“History Cannot Be Erased”

SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami said Satluj tells the story of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, whose work exposed alleged illegal killings and secret cremations during Punjab’s militancy period. According to the SGPC, the film highlights an important chapter of history and should be available for public viewing instead of being taken down. The organisation has urged authorities to lift all restrictions and restore the film at the earliest.

The OTT Removal Sparked Fresh Debate

The controversy began after Satluj, previously titled Punjab ’95, was removed from ZEE5 in India less than 48 hours after its release. The platform stated that the film would remain unavailable in India until further notice due to “current developments,” but did not provide a detailed explanation, leaving fans with more questions than answers.

The Story Behind The Film

Directed by Honey Trehan and starring Diljit Dosanjh, Satluj is inspired by the life of Jaswant Singh Khalra and his efforts to document alleged human rights violations in Punjab during the 1980s and 1990s. The project had already spent years battling certification issues before finally making it to OTT, making its sudden removal even more surprising for audiences.

The Debate Is Getting Bigger Than The Film

What started as a movie release has now become a larger conversation about censorship, historical storytelling, and freedom of expression. Political leaders, public figures, and Sikh organisations have all weighed in, with many calling for the film’s return while discussions continue around why it was removed in the first place.

Know Buddys Take

Here’s the tea. At this point… Satluj isn’t just making headlines because of what’s in the film. It’s making headlines because of what’s happening to the film. Whether you agree with its perspective or not, one thing is clear, the conversation has grown far beyond cinema. Now, all eyes are on whether Satluj finds its way back to Indian audiences.
