You know that feeling when a movie wraps up, and you’re just sitting there, like, “Wait. That’s it?” The credits roll, your brain is still buzzing, and you’re left wishing there was a little more. Whether it’s an ambiguous ending that begged for closure or a story so good that you simply didn’t want it to end these movies had us all in that exact spot.

Here are a few films that, frankly, should’ve given us just a bit more time to live in their worlds.

Let’s start with Coherence (2013). A sci-fi thriller that’s both mind-bending and chilling, it packs an incredible punch in under 90 minutes. The concept? A dinner party where reality starts unraveling in the weirdest way possible. It’s a wild ride, until it ends, and you’re left wondering what happened after that final, mind-bending twist. It’s one of those films that leaves you wanting a whole series (or maybe just a longer runtime).

Next up, Ugly (2013). This one from Anurag Kashyap is dark, gritty, and packed with a performance so raw, you can’t look away. It’s about a missing girl, family dysfunction, and police corruption, but it’s also a poignant look at how ugly human nature can get. The film’s abrupt ending is as brutal as the story itself, leaving us asking: What’s the aftermath? What happens to those characters? It could’ve gone on for hours, and we wouldn’t have complained.

In a similar vein, Enemy (2013), starring Jake Gyllenhaal, gives us a disturbing, surreal experience that ends with a jarring, almost nonsensical final scene. A psychological thriller where every detail counts, it keeps you on edge from beginning to end. But when the credits roll, you’re left with questions, endless theories, and a craving for more insight into this unsettling world. The film’s open-ended nature teases the possibility of a deeper dive we never got.

Speaking of characters that never got their due, Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! (2015) has to be on the list. With Sushant Singh Rajput in the lead, this film brought the iconic Bengali detective to life in an engaging, noir-inspired mystery. The movie’s sleek direction and intriguing plot set up a world that felt like it could have kept unraveling only to cut off way too soon. We were all hoping for a sequel that would build on the legacy of Byomkesh, but alas, it never came.

Waiting (2016) was another one that ended too soon. A story of two individuals coping with terminal illness, this film beautifully explored grief, acceptance, and emotional connection. The chemistry between Naseeruddin Shah and Kalki Koechlin is spot on, and the slow-burn, introspective vibe of the movie left us wanting to see these characters evolve further. We could’ve spent hours in that quiet, reflective space.

Similarly, A Death in the Gunj (2016) presented a haunting exploration of family dynamics, secrets, and the weight of silence. The film’s slow build-up toward a tragic climax was powerful, and the way it dealt with trauma and isolation left us with so much more to unpack. The story could’ve stretched further, diving deeper into its compelling characters and unsettling atmosphere. But sadly, it ends just as it peaks, leaving a lingering sense of what could’ve been.

Let’s talk about The Florida Project (2017). This one is a heart-wrenching portrayal of childhood innocence, poverty, and survival. It gives us a glimpse into the life of a little girl, living in a rundown motel with her single mother. The film’s naturalistic style draws you into the world so completely that when it ends, you’re almost jolted back to reality. The way it leaves things unresolved makes the world feel far too real, too uncomfortably unfinished.

Annihilation (2018) is another prime example of a movie that left us with more questions than answers. A mesmerizing, visually stunning film based on Jeff VanderMeer’s novel, it explores the boundaries of science, nature, and the human mind. The finale is cryptic, perplexing, and endlessly fascinating, but it also leaves the audience wondering about the nature of the mysterious zone, and what could’ve happened if the story continued. A sequel? A deeper dive into that universe? We’d have watched it all.

Finally, Game Over (2019) was a mind-blowing blend of psychological thriller and horror, with Taapsee Pannu delivering a career-defining performance. The film’s sharp, edge-of-your-seat suspense builds to an exhilarating conclusion only for it to pull back just before giving us the complete emotional payoff. The way it ends with a cliffhanger left fans like us begging for a second installment to wrap up all the loose ends and explore the thriller further.

These films weren’t just good; they were magnetic. They created worlds we didn’t want to leave, characters we wanted to know more about, and stories that could’ve unfolded further if given the chance. But alas, for reasons unknown (budget? Time constraints? The whims of a screenwriter?), they wrapped up when we were still holding on to our popcorn.

So, if you’re in the mood for something that stays with you long after the credits roll, these movies should be at the top of your list. And who knows? Maybe someone, somewhere, will bring them back for a sequel, a spin-off, or dare we say it, just a bit more time.

Until then, we’ll keep replaying the endings in our heads, hoping for that next chapter.
